Device lock for foreign mobile phones
In principle, the use of the Turkish telephone network is reserved for mobile devices purchased in Turkey.
As a tourist, you can use your own phone in Turkey for a limited period of time. It doesn’t matter whether you use a prepaid card on site or dial in using an e-SIM app. The maximum period for using a foreign phone is 4 months per calendar year from the first time you log into the network.
Foreign phones can be activated or registered in Turkey. The fee for this, however, is 45,000 Turkish lira (in 2024). That’s a whopping €1,200.
For one stay per year, this is nothing for the traveler to think about. Real Turkey fans who, for example, want to go to Ören or Anamur with Paragliding Turkey in February and then go to the Mersin Paragliding Festival in the summer or to the Air Games in Ölüdeniz in the autumn need a solution for this. An old telephone from the drawer that you can then bring with you to Turkey as a hotspot modem is probably the simplest solution.
